Talented young singer and songwriter Refentse Morake became a viral sensation in 2015, when a performance of him singing on the streets of Vereeniging was uploaded to social media.
His debut album “My hart Bly in ’n Taal” bagged Refentse four Ghoema awards, and featured renewed versions of classic hits imbued with his soulful energy, such as Johannes Kerkorrel’s “Halala Afrika”, David Kramer’s “Meisie Sonner Sokkies” and a Laurika Rauch medley. It shot to double platinum status, a feat rarely achieved by a first album, making him the top Afrikaans seller in South Africa for 2016 and filling his schedule with as many as 23 performances each month.
His diverse 2017 second album, “Deur My Venster”, features duets with legends Rauch and Anton Goosen.
There is no target market when it comes to the magical 4-piece troupe, Mr Cat and the Jackal – they cater for everyone in possession of at least one ear and a soul. Growing from theatre stage roots in 2007, the acoustic creations of these madcap musical storytellers can weave twist-in-the-tail Balkan stories, woo the crowd with a maudlin waltz or wow folk with Eastern rock ’n roll. The band initially gained popularity from their wide range of strange and wonderful tones created by self-built and modified instruments, as well as colourful stage performances, in intimate settings and at major festivals alike. These days, the burlesque boys focus more on a traditional approach to instrumentation. Currently in the process of releasing their fourth album in four parts titled “Chapters”, their latest video, “The Man”, is out now.
