Streetopia Obs – CT

A free, non-profit, one-day community-based event created through the collaboration of AfrikaBurn and the residents, businesses, civic organisations, NGO's and CSO's.

10:00 am - 6:00 pm

For the 5th year the AfrikaBurn and Observatory communities will once again fill the streets of Obs with art, craft, performance, vintage and mutant vehicles and good vibes!

As usual our event starts at 10am and the official event schedule closes at 6pm – and this time round, there’ll be some new additions and updates that will add even more to the experience on the day. Stay tuned for updates as we head towards our day on the streets on November 3oth.

As always, whether you’re an Obs resident or business owner or a visitor, you’re invited to step up and get involved – and you can find out how over on the Participate page of our website:

As a community-based event, residents of Obs, Salt River, Mowbray and Rosebank are given preference for stalls in our market. If you’d like to secure a stall, please email info@streetopia.co.za or fill out this form:

As with every year, you’re invited to bring a project or performance and add it to the mix on the day. Our team can assist you with logistics, transport and placement – all you need to do is reach out on info@streetopia.co.za

General Volunteer?

If you’d rather assist as a general volunteer, no problem – mail our team on info@streetopia.co.za and they’ll assist by providing info about the various ways your time and skills could fit in.

Set up

This is the team that assist in erecting and placing event infrastructure. It’s a great way to get to meet the people involved in creating some of the magic of the event, and the work is done on the Friday evening before our event day, and then again on the Saturday morning before our event schedule kicks off.

Strike Crew

Of course, what goes up must come down – and we have a team whose job it is to see to it that everything gets taken down in one piece and packed away at the AfrikaBurn workyard in Salt River. If you’re good with packing and enjoy endless banter, you’ll fit right in with this crew.

Art Assistants

If you’ve got a love for artworks, and have a keen eye for the best location for a piece that will bring out its best, this one’s for you!

Leave No Trace

As our event team seeks to leave the entire event area in a better state than we found it, we’re looking for eagle-eyed volunteers who can assist with identifying MOOP (matter out of place) and ensuring it’s managed so that the residents of Obs wake up to a spotless neighbourhood after the day’s done. If you’re interested in helping in this area, you can sign up for shifts.

Community Rangers

These are community mediators – they’re not the cops – and the kind of person that’s ideal is part lifeguard, part mediator, part troubadour. If you think you fit that description, sign up and prepare to have a great day meeting all sorts of people.

Thanks to everyone that’s stepped up and offered their help so far over the years!

It’s an opportunity to invert the usual ratio of urban infrastructure to creativity. A free, non-profit, one-day community-based event created through the collaboration of AfrikaBurn and the residents, businesses, civic organisations, NGO’s and CSO’s. And it’s a helluva lot of fun for everyone – because everyone’s invited.
