In its 21st year, as always the South African HORRORFEST will feature an amazing range of movies and short films from around the world, almost all having their SA premiere, plus extra spooky season delicacies across 29 October – 9 November at the Labia Theatre (plus additional events at other locations). More details below or head straight to: www.quicket.co.za/…/576-south-african-horrorfest/
Several new releases are getting advance screening premieres at the Horrorfest, like acclaimed BUGONIA (29 Oct), exciting anime CHAINSAW MAN The Movie: Reze Arc (30 Oct) and anticipated chiller SHELBY OAKS, our viewers able to catch these before everyone else.
Local distributors pulled THE TOXIC AVENGER (7 Nov) from their release schedule, but we secured a special screening of this wild movie, the only chance to see it in an SA cinema.
The live classic silent film soundtrack performance this year by THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE is for the legendary 1920 German Expressionist film THE GOLEM (1 Nov). While we encourage everyone to come dressed for the season across the event, this is the official Halloween dress-up night with prizes attached (from Disney+ streaming subscriptions and scary Penguin / Random House books, to Mr Lucky’s Cape Town Tattoo vouchers, Love In Vein blood vial kit, horror movie merch and more).
We also secured a fantastic companion piece to the 50th anniversary screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (31 Oct), the premiere of the brand new in-depth documentary STRANGE JOURNEY: THE STORY OF ROCKY HORROR (7 Nov). This is the definitive look at this global phenomenon featuring all cast & crew diving into its origin and rise to cult status, as well as people from all walks of life relaying how the movie impacted their lives over half a century.
With the new FRANKENSTEIN coming to Netflix, we’re reminding people of the legendary timeless 1931 Boris Karloff version with a very special 16mm film projection from a well-preserved print (9 Nov).
Local productions are also represented with screenings of new movies STREET TRASH (9 Nov) and SPELONK (2 Nov), cast and crew attending for both.
Exciting Heavy Metal monster movie DEVOUR’s director is also set to fly in from the USA (8 Nov).
There are two free festival warm-up screenings on 22 and 26 October with the rest of the expansive line-up featuring a wide array of thrilling movies and documentaries (full schedule below).
An amazing array of short films are spread across three feature length collections, featuring some of the best shorts from around the globe which you’re unlikely to see anywhere else.
The Horrorfest’s BLOODY PARCHMENT literature chapter with local authors reading from their work will happen at Exclusive Books in the V&A Waterfront (1 Nov).
This year also see the first edition of the Horrorfest’s Pub Quiz at The Armchair Theatre as a pre-event (28 Oct).
